Plot[]

Young Adam Reed walks into his garage one night to find a wounded pilot hiding there. This mysterious pilot turns out to be the older version of himself from the future, where time travel is in its infancy. He has risked everything to come back in time on a secret mission. Adding to the challenge of the mission, the two Adams discover they really don't like each other very much, and if they're going to save the world, they're first going to have to figure out how to get along.

Good Qualities[]

  1. While it focuses on comedy genre like The Pink Panther (2006) and Cheaper by the Dozen, they deceived to focus on different genres, like science-fiction, for Shawn Levy.
  2. Much like Free Guy, Shawn Levy has amazing directing talented and retains the charm of his career.
  3. Fun action sequences that come off more as an homage of the films of 1980s and have played in some of your favorite adventure films. For instance, future Adam has a weapon that young Adam quickly homage as a lightsaber. While it is not quite a lightsaber, future Adam's dismissal of young Adam's claims about the weapon plays almost like a fun wink to the audience.
  4. The premise of a time traveler who returns to fix the world while reconnecting with his preteen self and late father is very cool concept and overall has very well-executed.
  5. It is greatly inspired positively as a combination of 1980s sci-fi movies, notably E.T, Flight of the Navigator, The Last Starfighter and even Back to the Future, as well as 13 Going On 30.
  6. The chemistry between young and future Adam is just about perfect. From the start, they meet them at the garage when walks into one night after accidentally crash landing in 2022.
  7. In general, the acting is pretty great. Ryan Reynolds, in particular, gives out a amazing performance as future Adam, and much like what he did with Deadpool, Detective Pikachu and Free Guy, he steals the show once again.
    • Walker Scobell also matches him punch for punch with a great debut performance as young Adam.
  8. Rob Simonson's musical score is great.
  9. It has the nice Amblin-style tone that were well fitting rather than copying the story elements of other movies.

Bad Qualities[]

  1. Adam's mother receives little focus in the film and outside of a brief scene where the two talked in a bar, she barely interacts with future Adam (especially not to the extent his father did) and never realizes that he is her son grown up like his father did when he first saw him. She also disappears from the rest of the film's events after the bar conversation, only appearing in one scene set in 2018 and one of the last scenes in the film. Also, due to this, we never see how she reacts to the disappearance of her son.
  2. Scobell and Reynolds don't feel like the same character at different ages at times.
  3. Sometimes, the science in the movie is convoluted or doesn't follow its own rules.

Reception[]

Though the film recieved mixed to positive reviews from critics, it was met with a much more positive feedback from the audience. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 69% of 54 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.5/10. The website's consensus reads, "You've seen Ryan Reynolds do this sort of thing before, but The Adam Project offers slickly entertaining -- and occasionally even moving -- sci-fi action.". Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 55 out of 100 based on 26 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Despite not recieving the best reception from critics, the film was a massive commercial success, attracting 9.42 million views, and setting a record as the third highest debut for a Netflix exclusive film and one of the most watched Netflix original films to date. It also temporarily held the number 1 spot on Nielsen's streaming top 10 of March 2022 before being surpassed by Turning Red.
