Shrek is a 2001 American computer-animated comedy film directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson in their directorial debuts and based on the 1990 picture book Shrek! by William Steig. It's considered to be a turn-around for DreamWorks Animation. It stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow as the voices of the lead characters. The film parodies other fairy tale adaptations, primarily aimed at animated Disney films. It was the first animated film to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. A sequel, Shrek 2, was released in May 2004. Shrek: Forever After

Why it rocks[]

  • Decent animation, even for one of the first computer animated movies Dreamworks made.
  • Memorable characters, such as Shrek, Fiona and Donkey.
  • The humor is very funny as it also includes some adult jokes and there are also some good pop culture references.
  • The message of not judging a person by his physical appearance is nice.
  • Lord Farquaad is a funny villain and he's the perfect nemesis for Shrek since the latter wants to be accepted for his personality and not for his looks while Farquaad is superficial and wants everything in his town to be perfect.
  • Great voice acting, especially from Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow.
  • Amazing and memorable dialogue such as:
    • What are you doing in my swamp?!
    • In in the morning, I'm making waffles!
    • Ah, that's not very nice. It's just a donkey.
    • Onions have layers. Orges have layers... You get it? We both have layers.
  • The soundtrack is awesome, and it includes songs from Smash Mouth.
  • Shrek's character development is well done and written.

Bad Qualities[]

  • Shrek can be very mean to Donkey before they actually become friends.
  • Farquaad (the main antagonist of this film)'s name sounds like a swear word if you say it fast enough, which may have been intentional.
  • The lines "Well, I have to save my ass and Stubborn jackass are very inappropriate for a children's film. To be fair, the word ass is another word for donkey.
  • False advertising for two reasons:
    • One poster makes the Dragon look the main antagonist of the film despite its actually Lord Farquaad who is the main antagonist since the Dragon is more of a major character although the trailers show that Lord Farquaad is going to be the main antagonist of Shrek.
    • And speaking of that, one trailer said Shrek has to save Fiona from a villain showing Farquaad which would make you think that Farquaad kidnap Fiona although in the movie, Farquaad didn't really kidnap Fiona since he just sends Shrek to rescue Fiona although Shrek kind of did save Fiona from Farquaad in the end of the film.
  • Depending on your view, the scene where Shrek scares the villagers can be scary for younger viewers. This same goes to the Dragon scene.
  • While the humor is funny, some humor attempts (while not horrible by any means) are somewhat weak such as the scene where Shrek farts in the lake which cause the fish to be killed.
