Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl is a 2003 American comedy drama fantasy film directed by Gore Verbinski. It's the first film of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

Why it's great[]

  • Likeable and memorable characters like Captain Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann and Joshamee Gibbs.
  • It was the first movie made by Disney to not be family friendly while being instead very gritty and with some gruesome moments, even showing blood during the battles thus gaining a PG-13 rating. The same tone is used in all its sequels
  • Johnny Depp's performance as Captain Jack Sparrow is outstanding and legendary. In fact the character was the one to make Johnny Depp the star he is today thus becoming one of its most beloved characters.
  • The idea of a pirate being a good man is interesting and original which is one of the things that make Jack Sparrow such an unique character.
  • The humor is hilarious and there are some jokes that became memes over the years.
  • The directing is pretty good.
  • Good CGI. Still holds up to this day.
  • Well written screenplay.
  • Barbossa is a despicable villain and Geoffrey Rush does a perfect job at playing him.
  • "Son, i am Captain Jack Sparrow. Savy?"
  • The final battle is intense and well choreographated.
  • It was the beggining of one of the best franchises ever made.

Bad Qualities[]

  • Will Turner is initially annoying at times especially when he betrays Jack leaving him to be captured by Barbossa.
  • Elizabeth Swann was annoying in some scenes.
  • James Norrington is an unlikable character.
