DBZ THE MOVIE NO. 5.jpg

Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge (Japanese: ドラゴンボールZ とびっきりの最強対最強) is a 1991 Japanese animated science-fiction action film and the fifth Dragon Ball Z animated feature, originally released in Japan on July 20 at the Toei Anime Fair.

Plot[]

After destroying the tyrannical Frieza on Namek, Son Goku returns to a peaceful life with his family on Earth. When informed that his younger brother was killed by the Super Saiyan of Legend, Cooler becomes hellbent on making Goku pay for disgracing his family's honor. Goku must find the power within him to defeat a monster who's even more powerful than Frieza.

Why It Rocks[]

  1. This movie tries some new things with its formula, such as putting more focus on Piccolo, Krillin and Gohan in the battles and spicing the battle sequences with samurai film-like elements.
  2. Cooler, Frieza's older brother and the film's main antagonist, is a really great villain whose Fifth Form transformation is one of the best in Dragon Ball history.
  3. This film greatly shows Goku at his emotional breaking point, identical to the one that caused his first transformation into a Super Saiyan on Namek.
  4. A pretty powerful scene where Goku picks up a dead bird after being pummelled by Cooler, lets out a yell so powerful it cracks solid stone and transforms into his Super Saiyan form, giving enough of his energy to revive the bird.
  5. This film does a great job of doing a mini-saga with a new villain, full of character development, motivations and a good, satisfying ending.

Bad Qualities[]

  1. At only 47 minutes long, it's rather short.
  2. While DBZ fans will enjoy the battles and the villain, the plot suffers from being a bit shallow as it only focuses on Cooler's plan to kill Goku and destroy the Earth.

Trivia[]

  • A direct sequel, Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler, was released a year later.
