Child's Play is a 2019 American horror film directed by Lars Klevberg and written by Tyler Burton Smith, serving as a reboot of the 1988 film of the same name and a reboot of the franchise.
Plot: After moving to a new city, young Andy Barclay receives a special present from his mother -- a seemingly innocent Buddi doll that becomes his best friend. When the doll suddenly takes on a life of its own, Andy unites with other neighborhood children to stop the sinister toy from wreaking bloody havoc.
Why It Rocks[]
- It’s one of the few horror remakes that’s actually pretty decent and comes out as pretty subtle in it’s take on the film.
- Chucky in this version has a design to him that gives off very creepy, suspicious and suspenseful vibes, like how his eyes turn from blue to red when he’s in his murderous state.
- The idea of making Chucky an uncontrollable, murderous robot instead a possessed doll is a creative adjustment and is not the usual copy and paste remakes. It also helps to give the film a more realistic tone.
- The characters are relatable and/or very interesting, especially Andy and his new friends as they set out on a mission to kill Chucky.
- The cinematography and camera angles are well-shot and take on the tone of the film very well.
- The actors performances are not to bad, while not the best, it’s actually pretty decent to watch.
- Mark Hamill does a great job providing the voice of Chucky, almost sounding similar to Brad Dourif but still manages to do his own take on the killer doll.
- Bear McCreary did a great job with the score and the songs like Buddi song and the Childs Play theme and he uses a toy orchestra.
- A good mixture of well executed scary, awesome and heartwarming scenes throughout the movie.
- The pacing is quite good most of the time.
- The kills are very clever and elaborate. Fun fact: This is the first Child's Play movie, in which Chucky kills an animal (which is in this is case is Andy's pet cat).
- “THIS IS FOR TUPAC!” line is very memorable
Bad Qualities[]
- The film can get very boring sometimes.
- The plot can be predictable at times
- The film didn’t sit well with a few cast members from the original Child’s Play series (like Jennifer Tilly).
- The puppets effects, while ok, are not as good as the original.
- The tone is very inconsistent.
- Chucky’s new design while good didn’t sit well with some people
Trivia[]
- The filmmakers created a few posters for the film that parody Toy Story 4 (another 2019 living toy movie), which involves Chucky killing the characters in a gruesome fashion.
